Derrick Henry: natty or not?

Likely enhanced A 250-lb running back with a Heisman and two rushing titles

Short answer. Verdict: likely enhanced. At the peak physique on this page, Derrick Henry is 6'3" (191 cm) and 251 lbs (114 kg) at roughly 10% body fat. That works out to an FFMI of 27.5, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

Note. Playing weight is the listed figure and body fat is an estimate; a running back’s real body fat is not published. The verdict is opinion — Henry has no admission, failed test, or suspension on record. See the methodology page for how we judge.

A photo of him having his measurements taken at the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine on 26 February 2016 is about as good as this site’s evidence gets: Henry at 22, being measured by an official, in the frame.

Derrick Henry is 6’3” and 252 lbs (114 kg), which Wikipedia describes as a frame comparable to a linebacker’s — carried by a man who runs like a back. He won the Heisman, led the NFL in rushing twice, and is the only player with 2,000-yard seasons in high school, college and the NFL.

Where he started

Henry is the rare case where the earliest number is nearly as strange as the last one. His high school coach says he was 205 lbs as a freshman, and already about 6’3” — at fourteen. He weighed 240 lbs by his senior year, and 247 lbs at the 2016 combine.

Read the whole line and the shape is unusual. Most of the change happens in high school, between 14 and 18, which is when a boy that size is supposed to grow. From the end of school to his best NFL seasons he adds only about 12 lbs across eight years.

That is not the profile of someone who transformed as an adult. It is the profile of someone who was always this size. It does not clear him, because the question on this page is about the finished frame rather than the speed of arrival, but a page that showed one number could not tell you any of it.

The numbers

At that height and weight, with the visible condition he plays in, the FFMI on this page clears the drug-free ceiling our methodology page cites. Not by a bodybuilder’s margin, but clearly, and sustained across a decade of seasons at an age when running backs usually decline.

The estimate that carries the most uncertainty is his body fat, which nobody publishes. A higher true figure would pull the number down. It would have to be a lot higher.

What is not on the record

No failed test, no suspension, no allegation. The NFL tests its players for performance-enhancing substances, and he has never been sanctioned.

Verdict

Likely-enhanced — on the arithmetic alone, held as opinion, on the same terms as every other athlete here whose numbers clear the line without a record either way.

In their words

“Henry was 205 pounds as a high school freshman and a bit taller at 6-3.”

Common questions

Is Derrick Henry natty or on steroids?

This site rates Derrick Henry as likely enhanced. That is an opinion drawn from public numbers, not a statement of fact: the peak physique on this page works out to an FFMI of 27.5, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

Has Derrick Henry ever failed a drug test or admitted to using PEDs?

Nothing of the sort turned up in the sources on this page. Had it, the verdict would read confirmed instead of likely enhanced.

What is Derrick Henry's FFMI?

About 27.5. That comes from 6'3" (191 cm) and 251 lbs (114 kg) at roughly 10% body fat, normalized to 1.8 m. Drug-free lifters in the Kouri 1995 study topped out near 25.
