J.J. Watt: natty or not?

Short answer. Verdict: uncertain. At the peak physique on this page, J.J. Watt is 6'5" (196 cm) and 289 lbs (131 kg) at roughly 15% body fat. That works out to an FFMI of 28.0, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

A photo of him rushing for Wisconsin against Arizona State on 18 September 2010 has Watt at 21, in his last college season and months before the combine weigh-in the table below uses.

J.J. Watt is 6’5” and 288 lbs (131 kg), and won three Defensive Player of the Year awards in four seasons.

Where he started

This page used to hold one number and no history. It now has the climb. As a high school junior Watt was a tall, lanky athlete who weighed 220 lbs (99.8 kg), by his father’s account still short on muscle. He went to Central Michigan as a tight end. Five years later he weighed in at the NFL combine at 6’5” and 290 lbs as a defensive end.

That is 70 lbs (32 kg) between roughly 17 and 22, alongside a position change from catching passes to rushing the quarterback. FFMI moves from about 22 to about 28.

Two things make it less alarming than the raw jump looks. He was still growing, and a 220-lb 17-year-old at 6’5” is a thin frame with a lot of room on it. And the years in between are exactly the ones a college strength programme is built for. What the numbers cannot tell us is where in that range the gain stops being ordinary, which is why this page stays where it does.

The numbers

Height is what saves the arithmetic here. At 6’5”, the FFMI on this page lands close to the drug-free ceiling our methodology page cites rather than clearly past it — the same weight on a 6’1” frame, like Aaron Donald’s, would read very differently.

Our body-fat figure is a guess about a man whose real number nobody publishes, and it moves the answer either way. That is what keeps this page in the middle tier while Donald’s is not.

What is not on the record

No failed test, no suspension, no allegation. The one health disclosure on his page is the atrial fibrillation he revealed himself in 2022, which is not a doping matter and is recorded here only so nothing looks omitted.

Verdict

Uncertain — a very large man whose size is largely explained by being very tall, with no record in either direction.

In their words

“He had an athletic body, but the muscle maturity wasn't quite there yet.”

Common questions

Is J.J. Watt natty or on steroids?

This site rates J.J. Watt as uncertain. That is an opinion drawn from public numbers, not a statement of fact: the peak physique on this page works out to an FFMI of 28.0, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

Has J.J. Watt ever failed a drug test or admitted to using PEDs?

Nothing of the sort turned up in the sources on this page. Had it, the verdict would read confirmed instead of uncertain.

What is J.J. Watt's FFMI?

About 28.0. That comes from 6'5" (196 cm) and 289 lbs (131 kg) at roughly 15% body fat, normalized to 1.8 m. Drug-free lifters in the Kouri 1995 study topped out near 25.
