Saquon Barkley: natty or not?

Uncertain NFL Offensive Player of the Year, and one of the most-shared gym clips in football

Short answer. Verdict: uncertain. At the peak physique on this page, Saquon Barkley is 6'0" (183 cm) and 234 lbs (106 kg) at roughly 9% body fat. That works out to an FFMI of 28.6, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

No official record settles this. What follows is opinion and analysis based on public numbers — how we judge.

Note. Playing weight is the listed figure and body fat is an estimate. The verdict below is a statement of what we do not know. See the methodology page for how we judge.

A photo of him at the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine on 2 March 2018 has Barkley at 21, at the weigh-in that produced the numbers below.

Saquon Barkley’s combine numbers are the reason people bring him up: a 4.40-second 40-yard dash, 29 bench reps — tied for most among running backs that year — and a 41-inch vertical, at 6’0” and 233 lbs.

Where he started

The combine weight is not where the record begins. A June 2014 recruiting profile lists him as a Whitehall junior at 6’0½” and 205 lbs, and Penn State’s own 2017 roster still had him at 223 lbs in his junior season.

So the climb is 205 to 233 lbs across four years, roughly age 17 to 21 — about 28 lbs, or an FFMI moving from around 24 to around 29. That is a teenager filling out on a college strength programme, which is the least remarkable explanation available and the one the dates support. What it does not do is start at zero: a 17-year-old carrying 205 lbs at six feet is already a built athlete, and nothing published reaches back further.

The numbers

At that height and weight, and at a lean condition, the FFMI on this page lands right around the drug-free ceiling our methodology page cites. Right around it, which means the body-fat figure we estimated is doing the deciding — and nobody publishes a running back’s real body fat.

That is not a finding either way, and this page will not dress it up as one.

Context worth having

Speed and jumping are the least steroid-dependent qualities in athletics. Barkley’s most famous attributes — the 4.40, the vertical — are nervous-system and elastic qualities, not mass qualities, and they are largely genetic. The bench reps are the only strength item in that list.

No failed test, no suspension, no allegation is on his record.

Verdict

Uncertain — a borderline number on an athlete whose signature traits are the ones drugs help least.

Common questions

Is Saquon Barkley natty or on steroids?

This site rates Saquon Barkley as uncertain. That is an opinion drawn from public numbers, not a statement of fact: the peak physique on this page works out to an FFMI of 28.6, against the ~25 mark cited as the natural ceiling.

Has Saquon Barkley ever failed a drug test or admitted to using PEDs?

Nothing of the sort turned up in the sources on this page. Had it, the verdict would read confirmed instead of uncertain.

What is Saquon Barkley's FFMI?

About 28.6. That comes from 6'0" (183 cm) and 234 lbs (106 kg) at roughly 9% body fat, normalized to 1.8 m. Drug-free lifters in the Kouri 1995 study topped out near 25.
